Running a PC like this is defo possible as pure/clean oil does not conduct any electricity the computer will probably run without problems. A minor problem might be the heat distribution from memory, chipset and CPU.

The frying is of course bullshit, the oil will never get that hot without somekind of heater which will destroy the motherboard and the components on it of course.

you can see that the motherboard is not directly on the aluminum pan. It has standoffs.

This works, 38582 is right, oil does not conduct electricity.
The fries is bullshit, the oil will never get this hot, it would fry the motherboard.

Comment id:41951

wheres the cpu?

Date:2010 May 27
Comment id:38582

The oil wouldn't fry the motherboard, because cooking oil is a non-polar substance, and therefore does not conduct electricity, so there's no way it could cause a short circuit.

THE COMPUTER IS CERTAINLY NOT RUNNING OF THIS STUPID CONTRAPTION. SOMEONE COULD TRY THIS AT HOME, WITH DEVASTATING CONSEQUENCES. THE ONLY THING RUNNING IN THIS CONTRAPTION IS THE HOTPLATE. HOW STUPID DO YOU REALLY THINK WE ARE.

Date:2010 May 11
Comment id:32780

That's odd, The motherboard didn't short out on the aluminum pan.

Comment id:32723

Nice, even with the hotplate it ran, now isolate the fries from the contamination of solder/lead and you got yourself the future of McSuck.

Immersion cooling with oil. The original articled wondered if computers were hot enough to deep-fry some fries (which they can't, which is why the hotplate was required). During the entire thing, the computer still ran.

However, he suggested not eating them because of all that lead and mercury.

Comment id:16535

why do you feel the need to put this shit up here. I mean whats the point of tricking a bunch of noobs into thinking you can fry some fries with a comp. when you didn't. Hotplate is easily visible.

NO ONE ATTEMPT THIS! DO NOT EAT FOOD FRIED IN COMPUTERS! COMPUTERS CONTAIN MERCURY. MERCURY WILL KILL YOU!

This is not a public service announcement, and I do not hold myself accountable for anyones stupidity.

Yes, the processor would be safe, in oil cooled computers the only components you have to seal (or leave external of the oil) are the moving components, such as the hard drive and optical drives.

my first gen macbookpro can actually fry eggs on the back of it albeit slowly. doubt yours would heat a vat of oil.

if that's happening, and you're able to run those compy correctly without fail by oil... win

Oil Cooled computer. The oil doesn't short out the circuits, because Oil doesn't conduct electricity.
